Kate Winslet was excited about the multidimensional lead role after reading Brad Ingelsby’s screenplay. Its skill is also evident in the compassion evoked by the murder victim.
One the sign of a good detective series is that the excitement starts right from the first ten minutes and then holds its grip. Another, even better, is that when a murder victim is found, grief overwhelms the viewer’s mind.
The latter succeeds in the seven-part Mare of Easttown, in which the drama is built calmly and the violent death is revealed only at the end of the opening period. The series is written by Brad Ingelsby and directed Craig Zobel.
Zobel’s latest film The Hunt (premiere 2020) aroused noise exacerbating the contemporary U.S. political divide into human hunting. Mare of Easttown goes much closer to real life.
The series has the same themes as Ingelsby’s working-class film scripts Iron City (2013) and The Way Back (2020). However, the treatment is more complex and the middle-aged female protagonist of the series is clearly fuller than the male characters in the films. No wonder the Englishman Kate Winslet wanted a role.

Winsletin presented by Mare Sheehan is like brilliant Olive Kitteridge series (2014) converted into a criminal detective: a small-town resident prone to bitterness who has accumulated many reasons to be disappointed.
Sheehan’s son has died as a young adult. Sheehan takes care of her little grandson together with her mother, who stings (Jean Smart) and her teenage daughter (Angourie Rice).
In a small town while we were, her ex-husband Frank (David Denman) lives in a neighboring house. At a local bar, Sheehan starts flirting with writer-teacher Richard (Guy Pearce).
Elsewhere, 17-year-old Erin (Cailee Spaeny), who lives with his baby in his father’sPatrick Murney). The child’s other teenage parent (Jack Mulhern) already has a new girlfriend (Mackenzie Lansing).
The intimacy of Easttown residents is half familiar, half oppressive. Sheehan, for example, repeatedly encounters a mother whose drug daughter has not been cleared.
Winslet has always been able to act, but with age the work has become guaranteed. He succeeds again, even though in the role he must – seemingly contradictory – be able to be cynical, caring, intelligent, heavy-duty, vulnerable and charming. It would be weird if the Emmy nomination didn’t come off.
Of the preview episodes, the first three were of solid quality, but in the quarters and vitos, the level dips a bit. At that time, storytelling is supported by a strong memory of the murder victim. Guilty. Must. Find.
