Violence in Afghanistan: America withdraws embassy staff from Kabul

A.In view of the tense security situation in Afghanistan, the US State Department has ordered the withdrawal of diplomats from the embassy in Kabul. All embassy employees who could also carry out their tasks from another location are affected by the order from Tuesday, according to an updated travel advice on Afghanistan.

The American embassy cited “increasing violence and reports of threats in Kabul” as the reason. The consular section remains open. The ministry did not provide any information about how many diplomats are to leave and how many are to remain in the Afghan capital.

International troops will officially begin withdrawing from Afghanistan on May 1st. America’s President Joe Biden has set the target that the withdrawal should be completed by September 11th at the latest. This is the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that invaded Afghanistan by the United States.

For Afghanistan, the U.S. Department of State travel advice the highest warning level four: “do not travel”. The Americans’ NATO allies, including Germany, will withdraw their soldiers from Afghanistan in the coming months. Observers fear a new escalation of violence following a Western troop withdrawal and a return of the radical Islamic Taliban to power. Germany is the second largest provider of troops after the United States; there are currently 1,100 soldiers there.
