Blinken told Maas of concern over Nord Stream 2

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a telephone conversation with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed Washington’s concern over the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was stated in the statement of the head of the press service of the State Department, Ned Price, released on May 24.

“The secretary of state reaffirmed US concerns about the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline,” Price said.

On May 21, the United States added 13 vessels and three Russian organizations involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2 to its sanctions lists.

On May 20, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said it was almost impossible to prevent the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was 95% completed. She also said that the United States was guided by a key relationship with Germany and global factors in deciding to waive the sanctions against the pipeline operator Nord Stream AG 2.

On May 16, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for the early completion of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, noting that the Ukrainian authorities support the project.

Nord Stream 2 is being built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct and reliable gas supplies to Europe. Basically, the EU countries support the project and participate in its implementation. Poland, the Baltic States, Ukraine and the United States are opposed to Nord Stream 2.
