Representatives of the indigenous people assume that the buried bodies are students of an institution that was closed in 1977. Aboriginal children were regularly torn from their families and sent to boarding schools to force them to assimilate.
ÜThe remains of 215 Native Canadian children have been discovered on the property of a so-called residential school in Canada. They were found during radar investigations of the property near the city of Kamloops in western Canada, said Rosanne Casimir, head of the indigenous group living there. “To the best of our knowledge, these are undocumented deaths. Some were only three years old. “
The residential school operated on the site between 1890 and 1977 – a type of boarding school of which there were thousands in Canada and into which children were forced by indigenous peoples. A full report on the finds will follow, announced Casimir.
“Dark and Shameful Chapter”
The news breaks his heart, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday via the short message service Twitter. “It is a painful memory of this dark and shameful chapter in the history of our country.”
Trudeau apologized to the country’s indigenous peoples, and Canada is working to come to terms with it and make amends. Even so, there is still discrimination and inequality.
