What I absolutely will not miss of working from home is that there is always time for a household chore. Easy yes, but also distracting. Do some shopping, fold the laundry, vacuum. I now understand better than before corona that my zzp wife often feels like she’s never really ready. Tasks overlap in the day. This has advantages, but in terms of focus it is sometimes difficult. I just got back from a vacuuming session. The whole house. I had coffee with a colleague at work. Now I was moaning about the full dust bag and things that fall over when you vacuum around it.
Fortunately, the sucking had some working sense, because suddenly I came to a thought. (I think Vestdijk always had the vacuum cleaner on when he wrote. So that was howling all day long, because that man wrote something…) I thought about the things that are easy and fun when you work from home. Things you used to do almost secretly during real work. For example, I have Radio Tour de France on NPO 1 all day long (I wanted to say Hilversum 1, old-fashioned but in this case rightly so, because that’s how long the program has been around).
Listening to the Tour while you work is one of the most beautiful stolen moments of working life. Watching is nice too, but radio is more pure to me. Preferably in the car. There are those typical Tour records by Jacques Brel, an uptempo song from the British 80’s and then always that ‘Tourrrrr flash’ in between with all its bells and whistles. The ultimate moment is, of course, when you are in your car around five o’clock. Because then the men arrive. We are just before the finish, maybe 10-15 kilometers to go, there will soon be a sprint, or there is a breakaway on a very high mountain and someone else wants to jump away, or they are being chased by the whole peloton. All the commentators have already poured out their expertise, another nice picture has been played and then one of those last ‘tourrrr flashes’ of the day comes and the presenter on duty says: ‘Gio Lippens, come in.’ And that Lippens who then reports to us on every pedal stroke. The excitement, the drama, the release at the finish. And the pleasure of being able to experience this on your own. During working hours…
