The Head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, accompanied President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the celebration of the 238th anniversary of the birth of Simón Bolívar, “within the framework of the commemoration of the 200 years of Independent Mexico and the 500 years of the Resistance of independent Mexico.”
During the event, the capital president assured that “Mexico is experiencing a stellar moment”, as she affirmed that every day it seeks to exalt the human rights, honesty, moral economy “and a critical thought that exalts love above material wealth”.
“Equality between men and women is built, which condemns discrimination. What better tribute to the heroes that gave us Homeland, of course included, Simón Bolívar to this great Homeland, Latin America. Welcome to the city of rights and freedoms, to this that is his home and that today pays tribute to independence, freedom and the great liberator of America, Simón Bolívar ”, he said.
Sheinbaum Pardo said that Mexico is living today a new twinning with the peoples of Latin America, which is built on the basis of humanism, solidarity, progress with justice, the self-determination of peoples and respect for the rights of others and “what better day today to commemorate it.”
He recalled that Simón Bolívar was born in the capital of Venezuela and his training and struggle led him to be the liberator of his homeland and forger of a twinning with Mexico based on freedom and the union between both peoples.
The event was held in the Main Patio of the National Museum of History of Mexico City Castillo de Chapultepec, where Sheinbaum Pardo paid a brief tribute to three historical events: Simón Bolívar’s visit to the capital, which he called “Metropolis par excellence”; the references to Mexico in his letter from Jamaica; and your recognition as a Mexican citizen.
The event was attended by the honorary president of the Advisory Council of the National Coordination of Historical and Cultural Memory of Mexico, Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller; the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon; the general director of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), Zoé Robledo Aburto; the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA), Luis Cresencio Sandoval González.
Who was Simón Bolívar?
Simón Bolívar was born in the city of Caracas, Venezuela, on July 24, 1783. In 1815 he wrote the Letter of Jamaica, in which he expressed the possibility that the emerging American republics would establish a common front, which would allow them to expel the Spanish and establish a free government.
In that text, he expressed his interest in the Mexican independence process, which after being consummated, maintained communication with the Mexican governments and promoted a Latin American confederation to guarantee sovereignty and independence from the imperialist powers.
