Grupo Editorial Record decided not to renew the contract for 2 books by writer Olavo de Carvalho: “The collective imbecile” and “The least you need to not be an idiot.” both books are best sellers of the author, considered the intellectual guru of the government of President Jair Bolsonaro. Contracts expired in September 2020 and June this year.
“The Group, which completes 8 decades in 2022, continues to publish authors representing the most varied currents of thought, both from the conservative and the progressive fields, with the conviction that in this way it contributes to the public debate. The plurality and encouragement of the debate of ideas are commitments that guide and will continue to guide Record’s editorial decisions. Editorial Record Group”, the group said in a statement.
In interview to the newspaper The globe, published this Thursday (July 29, 2021), Rodrigo Lacerda, executive editor of Grupo Editorial Record, said that the “Olavo’s position today is one of terrible coexistence with dissenting voices, to say the least”.
“Our problem is not to publish an author more to the left or more to the right. The important thing is that everyone is democratic in their ways of acting. The publisher asks its authors to have the democratic spirit of living with different voices. Olavo’s position today is one of terrible coexistence with dissenting voices, to say the least”, said Lacerda.
According to the executive editor, the decision not to renew the contract does not involve financial issues, but “for a renewal of the publisher’s image”. “And the image of the Record label, which is the mother label that gives the group its name. There are other considerations that weighed “, said. “It’s a mature decision. And it’s something, in my personal opinion, good for Record’s image and for the Brazilian political moment.”
Ricardo Lacerda also said that Grupo Editorial Record is very plural. “We have voices of all political colors inside, from Paulo Freire to Brazilian and foreign liberal intellectuals. We look after the plurality of voices and hope that our authors also look after this, even if with different political colors”, declared.
From 2013 to 2019, the books “The collective asshole” (2013) and “The least you need to know not to be an idiot” (2018), edited by Record, sold 400,000 copies.
