Elections 2021: the hidden fight behind the hottest intern in Together for Change

A dispute between the political program of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta -with the vocation to include in his presidential project all possible opposition representations- and the reconversion of radicalism in a party with traditional structures and new faces. This is how the Buenos Aires intern of Together for Change, with the lists headed by Diego Santilli Y Facundo Manes.

Santilli will focus on 44 municipalities of the 135 of the province of Buenos Aires. They are all of the suburbs and the most populated in the interior of Buenos Aires, with cities such as Mar del Plata -the second Buenos Aires town after La Matanza-, La Plata, Bahía Blanca, Junín, Tandil, Necochea and others of medium size. Some 13 million people live in the suburbs – if you look at its three rings – almost 70% of the provincial total, and it is there where, in principle, Santilli appears stronger than Manes.

Santilli + Bullrich-Macri-Carrió

In the PASO, the former deputy head of the Buenos Aires government will try to integrate the toughest sectors of the PRO into the campaign, angry with the centrist streak promoted by Larreta and the candidate himself. That is why the Head of Government will try to get Patricia Bullrich to participate in activities both in Capital Federal with Maria Eugenia Vidal as in Province. “It is convenient for Patricia to walk the Province for its own future, so we suppose that she is going to do it,” says one of the leaders who thought about the Larretista campaign.

In that same sense they want Elisa Carrió to join. “Lilita is key to the intern,” they say near the Head of Government. “In the list of the Province, from the first places Horacio only chose Santilli, the rest are other sectors that are integrated into the space, and internally we want all of them to speak to their own voters. Later, in the general election, there we are going to privilege the center positions of Horacio and also Diego ”, explains one of the strategists of the landing in Buenos Aires territory.

Diego Santilli and the four leaders who will accompany him at the top of his list for the PASO Buenos Aires.

The curious photo of Santilli’s hair, which was disseminated on networks as a confirmation of his candidacy.

The campaign began with a photo distributed on social networks that showed a lock of Santilli’s red hair, known in politics as “El Colo”. It was an idea from the advertiser Carlos perez, from the BBDO agency, who has accompanied Rodríguez Larreta since his first campaign.

That advertising bet – which circulated a lot on the networks and generated approval and controversy – had an episode that for Santilli is very important: one of the first that spread it on his social media accounts was Mauricio Macri, these days stranded in Switzerland.

“That helped us a lot, because circulates the image of the unitThe same with the photo of the Santilli launch in La Plata, which showed all together those who only made a difference a few days ago, ”explains a Buenos Aires official.

Manes + UCR-Peronists

Opposite, the list headed by Facundo Manes will seek to emphasize three issues: the novelty implied by the arrival of the neuroscientist in politics, the support of Buenos Aires radicalism, which has maintained its presence in the interior of Buenos Aires for decades, and the contribution of the Peronist leg of Emilio Monzó Y Joaquin de la Torre.

Born into a middle-class home, Manes plans to tour neighborhoods with a message that is almost personal advice to young people: “If they don’t study, they won’t work”. He is going to propose himself as the embodiment of that message, and will seek to differentiate itself from Santilli due to the possibility it has of freely differentiating itself from the Macri government. The doctor thinks to emphasize that “he never had anything to do” with the former President and that his past is radical.

The message of the campaign will be more “national” than Buenos Aires and will share a “centrist” message with Santilli. We are a “popular center”, they tend to define themselves close to the new politician.

In addition to his brother Gastón -a lawyer and with a victory in the radical intern of the province together with Maximiliano Abad-, Manes surrounded himself with a experienced political team. One of them is the Abad himself, and there are also Monzó – a former owner of the Macri campaign and a public defender of the “thread” – and De la Torre, a former mayor and former Vidal official.

In the communication strategy, Gaston Douek, owner of the consulting firm Prosumia and partner of Guillermo Seita, is the one who concentrates the decisions. Douek put together a strategy almost exclusively based on social media, and spots Ramiro Agulla started working, which has been carrying several campaigns.

The idea of ”changing Argentina” that Manes will propose – with presidential aspirations for 2023 – will be combined with his own personal story, a story that the neuroscientist considers key to the campaign. Therefore, at the start of your tour you will visit Salto, the town where he spent his childhood.

The trajectory between that small city and its world-renowned scientific works, and also between the General Don José de San Martín school and the University of Cambridge, is the adventure that Manes and his team want to highlight as metaphor of the progress that will be proposed for Argentina. This message penetrates well in the interior of the province, where cities flourish when conditions improve to sell the products of the countryside to the world.
