The amount of online material related to the sexual exploitation of children has increased sharply during the pandemic.
The European Parliament has passed a law against child sexual abuse online on Tuesday night. MEPs passed a temporary decree allowing online services to voluntarily detect and remove child sexual abuse material.
The new legislation is intended to protect children more effectively from sexual exploitation and exploitation when children use e-mail, chat and messaging services.
Act introduces a temporary derogation from the Directive, which protects the privacy of communications and metadata. Criminal online material is to be searched for using technical solutions that analyze images, text and metadata.
The legislation is valid for a maximum of three years. The law can also be repealed earlier if, in the meantime, new permanent rules are adopted to combat online child abuse.
The European Commission intends to propose a more permanent solution to the problem later this year.
