Spike Lee calls Bolsonaro a gangster at the Cannes Film Festival opening

The American filmmaker Spike Lee, said this Tuesday (6.Jul.2021) during his opening speech at the Cannes Film Festival that President Jair Bolsonaro, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are “gangsters” and invited the audience to “raise your voice” against them.

Lee is president of the Cannes jury for this year’s edition and director of “Infiltrated the Klan”, nominated for the Oscar for best director and best film in 2019. He criticized the presidents and said that they “have no morals or scruples“.

The world is being ruled by gangsters. the orange agent [referência a Trump], the guy from Brazil [Bolsonaro] and Putin. They are gangsters and will do whatever they want. They have no morals or scruples, this is the world we live in, and we need to raise our voices against gangsters like these“, said.

“Infiltrated the Klan” is based on the true story of a black policeman who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. For these and other works, such as “Jungle Fever”, Lee is considered an important figure in the fight against racial discrimination in the United States.

At 64, he is the 1st African-American director to chair the Cannes Film Festival jury, along with 5 women and 4 men, including Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, awarded for “Bacurau”. The event started on this Tuesday (6.Jul.2021) and runs until the 17th of July.
