The French lighthouse was built in the late 16th century and is located in the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Gironde estuary in southwestern France. It was designed by an engineer Louis de Foix, and later in the late 18th century it was altered by an engineer Joseph Teulere.
The World Heritage Committee describes the lighthouse as a “masterpiece of maritime signaling”. According to the committee, Cordouan embodies major milestones in the architectural and technical history of the lighthouses.
The Cordouan lighthouse is nicknamed the “king of lighthouses” in France.
Unesco there have been other recent changes to the list of World Heritage sites.
For example, the city of Liverpool was removed from the list due to a changed cityscape. At stake is also the prehistoric Stonehenge, which Unesco intends to list as endangered World Heritage Sites. The city of Venice and the Australian Great Barrier Reef, on the other hand, were allowed to retain their status.
