American journalist Mark Thiessen in a newspaper article Washington Post proposed to impose impeachment on US President Joe Biden over the Nord Stream 2 deal with Germany.
The observer noted that the head of the White House is putting pressure on Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and forcing him to agree to conditions that are unfavorable for Kiev. He recalled that in 2019, the Democrats initiated an impeachment procedure against then-presidential Donald Trump, because, in their opinion, he put pressure on Zelensky to investigate the corruption scandal with Hunter Biden.
“Now the Biden administration may have twisted Zelenskiy’s hands to come to terms with the US-Germany deal that would allow Berlin, together with Moscow, to complete the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline,” Thyssen said. According to the journalist, putting the pipeline into operation will allow Russia to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine.
The observer noted that Trump pursued a tough policy towards Moscow and managed to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2 with the help of sanctions, while his successor suspended military assistance to Kiev, approved the extension of the treaty on measures to further reduce and limit strategic offensive arms (START-3) and entered into a gas pipeline deal.
Thyssen added that Biden is unlikely to be impeached because of his “soft” policy towards the Russian Federation. He concluded that demanding Zelenskiy to agree to a “murderous” project is a “shameful act” even if it does not entail the removal of the US president from power.
Earlier, GOP Senator Ted Cruz announced the surrender of American leader Joe Biden and his administration to Russia over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. He expressed confidence that the next US President, being a Republican, will return sanctions against the project.
On July 21, the United States and Germany agreed on joint measures for Nord Stream 2. Thus, the parties undertake to adopt sanctions against Russia if it tries to use gas supplies as an instrument of pressure. In addition, within the framework of the agreement, Germany should promote the extension of agreements on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, which expire in 2024, for at least ten years.
