The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), responded to tweet which quotes an excerpt from the last live made by Jair Bolsonaro (no party), on July 2, 2021, in which the president questions the effectiveness of Coronavac.
In the video, the head of the federal Executive says “that the guy over at WHO [se referindo ao diretor-geral da, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus], who is not a physician, said that the delta variant of covid spreads in vaccinated populations”. then states “open the game soon, there’s a vaccine there that unfortunately didn’t work, open the game soon”.
He added that he is waiting “that guy from São Paulo talking. I talked every day. Unfortunately, this vaccine of his unfortunately did not work in Chile. Here in Brazil it also seems to be complicated. We hope that this news is not right, but unfortunately it seems that it did not work out very well”.
Paes responded to the statement, and said: “Take any vaccine. A good vaccine is the one that goes in the arm! Faced with misinformation, I feel obliged to give my personal statement: my mother took the two doses of Coronavac and went through the covid unharmed. My father had only taken the first one of another vaccine”, published the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, thanking Butantan and the governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB). The vaccine was developed by Chinese biopharmaceutical Sinovac and is produced in Brazil by Butantan, linked to the São Paulo government, with Chinese inputs.
Eduardo Paes’ father, 78-year-old Valmar Souza Paes, died on June 25 as a result of covid-19 complications.
Doria defends
The governor of São Paulo, João Doria, endorsed Paes. On the social network, he lent solidarity to the death of the father of the mayor of Rio de Janeiro by covid-19 and stated that “The rationality will overcome misinformation”.
