Conagua rules out overexploitation of the aquifer in the Puebla sinkhole

The National Water Commission (Conagua) handed over to the government of the state of Puebla the technical opinion on the geohydrological conditions in the area of the sinkhole that occurred in the town of Santa María Zacatepec, in the municipality of Juan C. Bonilla, which was prepared by the General Directorate of the Cuenca Balsas Agency, with the support of the Underground Water Management of the Technical General Subdirectorate.

The document highlights the following points:

According to the geological information of the site, there are elements that suggest the process of formation of caves or sinkholes, which obeys a natural process of dissolution of calcareous rocks, which can eventually collapse or become naturally obstructed and open later.

In the area of the sinkhole, groundwater has a higher temperature than in the rest of the aquifer, which suggests the rise of the deep waters towards the upper aquifer.

According to the verification carried out recently of the piezometric levels of the aquifer in the area of the sinkhole, the static levels remain stable, similar and even in some cases above those reported in previous studies.

The above indicates that there is no evidence of depletion of the aquifer; that is to say, there are no elements to establish a causal relationship of the sinking phenomenon from the process of variation of the aquifer levels.

Based on the aquifer availability studies and the update of its availability published in the Official Journal of the Federation on September 17, 2020, the Puebla Valley aquifer It still has availability, with which it is concluded that the aquifer is not in a condition of overexploitation, much less that this could be the cause of the geological accident of the sinkhole.

In this sense, it is considered that the studies initiated by different federal and state agencies in the field of their competence, should focus mainly on the geological and tectonic analysis deeper than the area of interest.

The National Water Comission He reiterated his willingness to continue collaborating, within the scope of his powers, with the federal and state authorities involved in dealing with this problem, in strict adherence to technical and scientific evidence.
