Burning tires were placed around the monument on the same day that at least 488 acts against the president’s government Jair Bolsonaro (no party) are scheduled in Brazil and in several cities around the world.

Manuel de Borba Gato was a pioneer from São Paulo and his history is directly linked to the persecutions, deaths and enslavement of Indians and blacks during the colonial period.

It is not the first time that the monument has been the target of protesters. In 2016, the statue was spray-painted with colorful paints. In 2020, it was set on fire by a group of people called the Peripheral Revolution.
