The trial is expected to take months.
Stockholm the district court on Tuesday began prosecuting a lawsuit filed for human rights violations and several murders in Iran in the 1980s.
The accused is a 60-year-old Iranian man who worked in the Iranian prison administration at the time of the events. The news agency TT reports this.
The case was originally raised by the human rights organization Amnesty International. It said the killings took place in the midst of the Iran-Iraq war in July-August 1988. The victims were men and women sitting in Iranian prisons on suspicion of collaborating with an armed organization supporting Iraq.
The suspect was suspected of playing a leading role in events that resulted in the deaths of thousands of victims, either by hanging or shooting.
The 60-year-old man has been sitting under arrest since he was arrested at Arlanda Airport in November 2019.
Iran The events of the 1980s have taken on new political significance since Iran’s former Chief Justice and Prosecutor General Ebrahim Raisi, 60, won Iran’s presidential election last month.
Raisin is said to have been one of four judges in the 1980s responsible for death sentences handed down by secret courts.
According to TT, the trial is expected to take months. The name of the accused has not been published by the Swedish media.
