The leftist Pedro Castillo took office on July 28 as president of Peru, a month and a half after the controversial elections against Keiko Fujimori. The president ratified that his first step will be to present a bill to form a Constituent Assembly that allows the drafting of a new Magna Carta. Among its main management guidelines, it promised to accelerate vaccination against Covid-19 and promote a frontal fight against corruption.
A government “of the people for the people” promised the new ruler of the Peruvians, the leftist Pedro Castillo.
During his inauguration speech that coincided with the 200 years of the country’s bicentennial, the president reiterated his position to present a bill to Congress to form a Constituent Assembly.
According to the head of state, it is necessary to change the current Magna Carta to end corruption and modify the nation’s economic model in order to promote benefits for all sectors of the population, especially for the most vulnerable people.
However, the president promised that he will do so in compliance with the law and with the tools provided by the current Constitution. “We will insist on the proposal always within the framework of the law with the legal instruments, there will never be a clean sweep of legality. We will have to reconcile positions with Congress because it will be here where the corresponding norms will have to be approved, “he said.
In an attempt to refute some of the biggest fears that his political campaign aroused, the leftist affirmed that there will be no expropriations, he will respect private property and foreign investment, but that he will seek to end economic monopolies.
Likewise, and among his management priorities, the president promised to accelerate vaccination against the Covid-19 pandemic in Peru, a nation that has registered the highest per capita mortality rate in the world from the virus.
“Faced with a third wave of infections, to date we have 16% of the population vaccinated with two doses and a very weak first level of care. This means the enormous challenge of reaching more than 70% of the vaccinated population by the end of the year and achieving community protection ”, he pointed out.
Castillo, a 51-year-old rural teacher, who comes to the presidency outside the traditional political conglomerates, vowed to put the fight against corruption as one of his government priorities. He highlighted the Lava Jato case, in which at least three former presidents of the country were splashed and although he highlighted the accountability of some officials, he assured that the businessmen involved will also have to face justice.
