After the appearance of the Covid-19 virus (Sar-Cov-2), variants are a natural process of disease evolution. These genetic alterations of the virus travel all over the world and scientists are concerned about their ability to transmit.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 11 variants of the coronavirus have been identified in the world. In Brazil, a panel from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) points to a 59% prevalence of Delta in the month of August. At least 50 people have died from the strain in the country.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), these strains have two categories: concern and interest. The following are the main mutations of concern already discovered:

Delta (B.1.617.2)

Discovered in India, the Delta variant is known for its high transmission capacity. The strain has already become predominant in at least 61 countries and accounted for more than half of the cases analyzed, according to the international platform Gisaid. Delta currently circulates in more than 111 countries, and surveys show a level of transferability 50% higher than previous ones.

Alpha (B.1.1.7)

The British variant, dubbed the Alfa, caused the UK to postpone the country’s full reopening. Scientists are still investigating the strain, but the initial hypothesis is that it has a higher lethality potential.

Beta (B.1.351)

The Beta variant, discovered in South Africa, causes the action of antibodies to decrease. As a result, the patient’s body response to treatment and recovery is slower. It has not yet been proven whether the strain is related to the most serious cases.

Range (P.1/P.1.1/P.1.2)

The Brazilian variant, named Gama, was predominant in Brazil at the beginning of the pandemic. The transmissibility rate of this strain is up to 2.4 times higher than the original coronavirus variant. Studies indicate that this variant has a higher rate of escaping antibody activity in the body, increasing the risk of reinfection.

Variants of interest

  • Epsilon (B.1427 and B.1429) – identified in California;
  • Zeta (P.2) – identified in Brazil;
  • Eta (B.1525) – identified in Nigeria;
  • Theta (P.3 and B.1.616) – identified in the Philippines and France;
  • Iota (B.1526) – identified in the United States;
  • Cover (B.1617.1; B1.620 and B.1.621) – identified in India and Colombia;
  • Lambda (C.37) – identified in Peru.
