The Debate – Haitian migration: an odyssey to the US in search of opportunities

First modification:

In recent weeks, thousands of migrants, most of them Haitians, have been seen living in a precarious camp under a bridge on the Mexican border. Added to these painful images are the actions of border agents on the US side chasing migrants on horseback and mass deportations. In this edition of El Debate we analyze the difficult situation that thousands of Haitian migrants have to live when they leave their country in search of a better quality of life.

In terms of migration in the region, Mexico has registered the arrival of some 147,000 undocumented immigrants between January and August of this year, three times more than in the same period of 2020. However, the most critical case is that of Haitians: close to 2 million of its 11.5 million inhabitants have had to leave their country and many of them now make a double migration from Chile and Brazil, where they could not find stable work and legal conditions to stay, so the United States is the place where they hope to have a new opportunity.

What is happening in Haiti? How are the transit countries that have been overwhelmed, such as Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico, handling the situation? Is the international community giving support and looking for solutions to this problem? How to help this country immersed in a political, economic, social and public health crisis? These are the many questions that arise in this difficult situation.

We analyze this topic from the hand of our guests:

– Erika Guevara Rosas, Director for the Americas at Amnesty International.

– Jeremy Mac Gillivray, deputy head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Mexico.
