Biden calls on party members to agree to historic investment package

US President Joe Biden presented details of his “historic” social and green investment package to Democrats in the House of Representatives on Thursday. He said that at a press conference, American media report. Biden, who has called on his party members to vote in favor of his plans, will need the support of all Democrats to pass the $1,750 billion package.

Biden stressed in his statement the importance of Congressional support for his plans. “We are at a turning point,” the president said. “The rest of the world is wondering if we can function.” It is not hyperbole, he said, to say that his presidency depends on “what happens next week.”

The investment package has been stripped of a number of points important to progressive Americans in recent months in an effort to steer the plans through Congress. That frustrates some Democrats because Biden’s ambitions are partly giving way to political reality and making concessions. Others of his party members oppose his plans precisely because they consider them too expensive.

Removed from the initial package include paid parental leave and the ability to negotiate drug prices. Biden still wants to allocate money for free kindergarten and extra subsidy for childcare. The plan also includes USD 555 billion for climate measures. The White House previously called the package the largest-ever investment in climate policy and improving the country’s health care system in more than a decade.
