Tiplam has highest grain and sugar shipment rate with 2 shippers, says VLI

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – A berth of the Tiplam terminal, in the port of Santos (SP), reached an effective loading rate of 4,400 tons per hour in grain and sugar exports, making the structure the most agile in the shipment of these commodities in the country , integrated logistics operator VLI told Reuters.

This pace of shipments was achieved after VLI deployed a second shiploader at the site and carried out tests in September. But it wasn’t just the additional equipment that allowed such speed of loading, it also depends on the expertise of the VLI teams.

“The effective rate is possible thanks to the planning and study of the Operation and Maintenance teams, which made the procedure feasible without compromising the integrity of the ships”, explained the general manager of Operations of the Southeastern System at VLI, Denílson Fernandes.

With the second loader, there is a gain of up to 24 hours on shipments on a ship that transports 60,000 tons compared to shipments using a single “shiploader”.

According to him, the loading operation with two simultaneous shiploaders is quite unusual and requires specific expertise, since it is necessary to accurately remove the ballast water simultaneously with the entry of the cargo, so as not to compromise the stability of the vessel.

Each loader has the capacity to discharge up to 3,000 tons per hour, but the discharge cannot be carried out at 100% speed, precisely to preserve the ship’s stability and integrity.

The company did not release comparable data with other terminals, but said the charging rate with two chargers is the highest among the benchmarks.

VLI projects positive impacts with the implementation of the equipment.

“The expectation is that the Tiplam in 2021 will carry out volumes higher than those practiced in recent years and the simultaneous loading integrates a series of processes towards which the company directs efforts, thus obtaining real gains in efficiency”, said Fernandes, without detailing specific volumes .

Tiplam moved 12.6 million tonnes between grains, sugar and fertilizers in 2020, up 16.3% compared to 2019.

At the terminal, the integration with the rail modal and the arrival of 100% of the exported cargo on the rails makes the product flow process more agile and allows, per day, the average receipt of six trains, each with 80 wagons, responsible for the delivery of 35 thousand tons of sugar and grains (during the harvest period), according to company data.

Tiplam operates with four berths, two of which operate exclusively in exports.

VLI, which includes the North-South (FNS) and Central-Atlântica (FCA) railroads, as well as port terminals located in Santos (SP), São Luís (MA) and Vitória (ES), operated in the ports where it operates more than 60 million tons in 2020, or about 20% of the Brazilian grain and sugar crop.
