In this season’s final episode of Dear Singers the artists may choose one of their colleagues to sing a duet. Singer Karsu Dönmez (31) had her eye on Belle Perez, who is best known for her Spanish-language songs. Perez, who lives in Belgium and also masters the French language, was therefore the ideal candidate to sing a duet with Karsu. Karsu chose the song Je suis Malade by Lara Fabian, which she had partly translated into Turkish by a good friend. “I talked a lot with her. About everything I’ve been through in life, I’ve known very dark, black days. She listened and put all my feelings on paper. And then I approached Belle. I thought if I could choose someone: I want to do it with Belle.”
The duet had an important meaning for Karsu. “For me, after my dark days, it’s the first song I’m going to sing now in which I really sing about what I’ve been through. So it’s very special to me.” Although the song didn’t have much of an emotional charge for Perez, Je suis Malade has been on her Spotify playlist for ‘years’. “So I think it’s great. I really think it’s a gift that we’re going to sing this tonight.”
The 45-year-old Perez started the first notes of the song and soon colleagues, including Joe Buck, Anneke van Giersbergen and Alides, looked on breathlessly. The song came in so intensely with presenter Jan Smit that the tears were in his eyes. Karsu’s part, where the emotions were visible and audible, also visibly entered the other artists. There was a whisper of ‘wow’ and afterwards the duo even got a standing ovation.

“It was almost a kind of religious experience. It was not, not normal, what happened there,” said Hendrik Jan Bökkers. Jan Smit was also perplexed. ,,I’ve been sitting here on the bench for ten seasons and I think this was the most beautiful duet I’ve ever seen. From the bottom of my heart.”
Not only were the artists deeply moved by the duet of the singers, the viewers at home were also blown away. Some even shed a tear. Compliments for the duo poured in on Twitter. ‘That’s how you tell a story! Je suis malade, what a brilliant performance,” someone wrote. And another: ‘Tears down my cheeks for a duet I didn’t understand a word of, but the expression said enough and sung so ridiculously beautifully!
