FecomercioSP corrects: tourism sector projects to end the year with 16% growth – ISTOÉ DINHEIRO

Att. Messrs. Subscribers,

FecomercioSP clarified that the information contained in the first paragraph of the previously published note was incorrect. The tourism sector’s revenue in 2021 should be R$151 billion, not R$130 billion, as stated. The corrected text follows.

The tourism sector plans to end this year with sales of R$ 151 billion, an amount that, if confirmed, will impose a growth of 16% over last year, according to the Tourism Council (CT) of the Federation of Commerce of Goods , Services and Tourism of the State of São Paulo (FecomercioSP). This expected growth, according to the entity, is based on the trajectory of recovery started in April. However, it still leaves the sector’s performance 22% lower than that recorded in the pre-pandemic period.

“The sector, which was heavily impacted by the restrictions of the health crisis, faced two distinct periods in 2021. The first, with the second wave of the covid-19 pandemic, which further jeopardized activities in the first half of the year, and the second, with the resumption made possible by the advance of vaccination, in the last half of the year”, observe the technicians from FecomercioSP.

As of April, according to them, the variations became positive (36%), although it is necessary to consider that the basis of comparison – the second quarter of 2020 – is quite fragile due to the context of restrictions on economic activities experienced in the period .

According to the Federation, the segments that registered the most expressive results, from the fourth month of the year, were air transport and accommodation and food services, with annual increases of 83.9% and 61.9%, respectively .

“However, once again, the basis of comparison explains the result, as these were the sectors that most suffered the impact of the crisis in 2020, being also still below the level of April 2019”, explain the technicians from Fecomercio.

Demand from air passengers, which until June was less than 5 million people, reached a level above 6 million in July, remaining at the same level in the following months. Now, the perspective is that air transport will end the year with revenues of R$ 37.8 billion, showing an increase of 30.5%. However, still 36% below the 2019 level.

Projections

The projected result of the last quarter should be 12% lower compared to the same period of the pre-pandemic year, predict the specialists at FecomercioSP.

Also according to projections, the food and accommodation group should register a 15.9% increase, with sales of R$ 25 billion. Compared to 2019, the picture is still negative at 26%.

“So, as with air transport, however, there may be an acceleration of recovery in the latter part of the year. In the case of road transport (intercity, interstate and international), which showed relatively modest declines at the beginning of the year, it should end 2021 with a 9% increase and revenues of R$ 17.7 billion, but 5.1% below the level of 2019”, punctuated the economists of the Federation of Commerce.

As for the car rental group, agencies and tour operators, the expectation is that there will be an increase in revenue of 4.2%, reaching a turnover of R$29 billion. However, compared to 2019, the level is still 8.5% below. Although negative, it is one of the most favorable relative results among the sectors analyzed by the survey. The last quarter should register a growth rate of 7%, signaling an important recovery for 2022.

For cultural, recreational and sports activities, which fell by 7.4% in the first half of the year, the projection for the second half of the year is for an increase of 11.7%, ending 2021 with a rise of 1.9%.

“As this group depends, essentially, on the number of people fully immunized, with a well-established pace of vaccination, the trend is that there will be an increasing number of people and activities in the next year, providing conditions for a more robust recovery. Finally, for waterway transport, the projected increase is 8.4%, with a turnover of BRL 467 million in absolute values.”
