(Reuters) – Viewers lined up again on the streets of Manhattan this Thursday to watch Macy’s 95th Thanksgiving Day Parade, whose edition last year was scaled back and closed to the public because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Other cities across the United States hold parades, but the New York event is part of holiday traditions and is televised nationwide to about 50 million people before Thanksgiving meals, according to Macy’s.
Giant helium balloons depicting cartoon characters and toys are often the main attraction, and this year’s parade featured newcomers such as Grogu, better known as Baby Yoda from “The Mandalorian,” a series derived from the Star Wars franchise, and Ada, the young scientist from Netflix’s “Ada Twist, Scientist” series.
The classic Snoopy Astronaut reappeared at this year’s parade in its ninth version of the Snoopy balloon, according to Macy’s website.
In total, there were 15 balloons guided by participants, the largest of them 22 meters high, said the chain of stores.
On the floor, between bands and dancers, 28 floats traversed the four-kilometer route from Central Park West to the Macy’s store on 34th Street showcasing audience favorites such as Sesame Street Muppets, Miss America and the Foreigner rock.
While it’s a television event for most of the country, in New York City it’s one of the biggest annual gatherings, and enthusiasts reckon it’s a crowd of millions.
