Russia has opened an investigation against the American streaming giant Netflix for an alleged violation of a Russian law that prohibits “gay advertising”. The information was published first by the daily Vedomosti and then by websites and international news agencies.
According to the report, public commissioner for family protection, Olga Baranets, told Russia’s Interior Ministry that Netflix had violated a 2013 law in the country, criticized by human rights groups, which prohibits the dissemination of “propaganda about relations non-traditional sexuality” among Russians under the age of 18, by providing series with LGBTQIA+ themes that would have ratings from 16 years of age onwards. The ministry’s Moscow office is looking into the matter.
Netflix, which could be punished with a fine of up to 1 million rubles ($13,400) or temporarily suspended from service in Russia, told Vedomosti it would not comment on the matter.
However, a source close to Netflix told the Russian newspaper that the company earlier this month checked its catalog of series and films in Russia with LGBTQIA+ content and would not have found any rated after 16 years.
