The American Christmas Tree Association has had to assure people that there should be enough Christmas trees for Christmas. In America they are afraid that Christmas cannot go on due to a shortage of Christmas trees.
It is not corona that the Americans fear will throw a spanner in the works this Christmas, but problems with supplying both plastic Christmas trees and real ones. After fears of a shortage of turkeys for Thanksgiving last Thursday, Americans now fear that Christmas will be canceled due to a shortage of Christmas trees. That reports The Guardian. Still, the American Christmas Tree Association (ACTA) has promised residents that they will do everything they can to save Christmas.
Shortage due to delivery problems
There is a threat of a shortage of plastic trees due to supply problems. Some of the plastic trees came from China, but that ship got stuck in the Panama Canal, preventing the ship from docking on the west coast of America and now trying to make it east. In addition, due to the supply problems, the trees are expected to be four times more expensive than usual.
Problems have arisen with real trees because, among other things, the transport of the trees has become more expensive. In addition, a number of farms that grow the trees were affected by forest fires last year. The Christmas Tree Association is afraid that there will be pressure on these growers now that the plastic trees are going to be so expensive.
Last year, some 94 million American households had a Christmas tree in their home, more than 80 percent of which had a plastic tree in their home.
Netherlands no problem
There is no shortage of Christmas trees in the Netherlands yet. Experts do notice that with corona, the Dutch are now increasingly bringing Christmas trees and further Christmas decorations into their homes. Tradition expert Ineke Strouken said to this newspaper before: “Now with corona, we apparently really need a cozy winter nest. I had never seen Christmas trees before Sint Maarten, but this year I did.” Usually, the Christmas tree is traditionally only brought into the house after Christmas Eve, but because the dark days are now also startled by the corona virus and the uncertainty of measures, people have a greater need for the lights that belong to the Christmas party.
It has also been storming at the garden centers for weeks. The plastic trees are especially popular, because they last longer than the real trees. In addition, the real trees have only been for sale since last week.
