Mother Ivana Smit asks Rutte for help in investigating daughter’s death

Below is the full text of the letter:

Dear Mr Rutte,

Tuesday December 7 it was already 4 years ago that I lost my daughter Ivana Smit.

Losing a child is the worst thing that can happen to a parent. When a case surrounding the death of that child is still not clarified, then that is completely unbearable. That’s how we know unfortunately.

Ivana died in Malaysia and the police there not only did their job very poorly, but also did everything they could to bury the case as soon as possible. Without getting the answers we so desperately need and those involved in her death being brought to justice and above all without justice.

Through the efforts of our family, our Dutch lawyer and our Malaysian lawyer, we were finally able to get the Malaysian court to order that the case be reopened. No accident, no suicide.

That last one was already two years ago! Two years. And it is the same Malaysian police that must now re-examine the case. Worse, even the same police team leader is on the case. The man who really screwed up everything in the first case.

Nothing seems to have happened in the past two years. Not a single indication that serious investigations are still being conducted into the death of our dear Ivana.

The Dutch Public Prosecution Service appears to have offered help, but that’s where the story ends. We have not received any more information. All kinds of diplomatic procedures are cited as reasons for not sharing information. They also appear to be afraid to approach Malaysia.

We do see that people in Malaysia let things bleed to death. No active investigation in this murder case. A murder case. And the longer we wait, the smaller the chance that any evidence can still be secured.

Mister Rutte, I am not addressing you for nothing!

Because the people suspected of involvement in our daughter’s death are on the loose. No action will be taken to bring them to justice.

No body or authority has dared to speak to Malaysia about this matter. A case in which a Dutch woman died. My daughter. Our sweet and beautiful Ivana.

As prime minister, you are actually the only one who can really mean something from the Dutch government, especially now that others are failing. Not only can you do that, but actually I think you have an obligation to intervene. Mandatory towards your citizens. To enforce justice for Ivana.

Very recently, the Australian Parliament has also made a unequivocal statement about the incompetence of the Malaysian police. Coincidentally also about a case from 2017. The Australian government has not hidden behind a diplomatic door, but has gone public for its own citizens.

This is actually what I want to ask you, Mr Rutte. To you and your fellow ministers. Call Malaysia to account for their serious failure. Stand up for us as relatives, stand up for Ivana!
