The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, signed this Sunday (5) the decree that officially dissolves the Assembly of the Republic and calls for early elections for January 30, as he had previously communicated to the country.

The signature was announced by the presidency in a statement, a month after the head of state informed the country that he would call legislative elections for January 30th.

Rebelo de Sousa waited for the deadline provided for in the law for the dissolution of Parliament, which ended this Sunday, to give the Assembly time to process as many pending legislative initiatives as possible, such as the euthanasia law -which ended up vetoing- or anti-corruption measures .

Under the terms of the Constitution, during the period in which the parliament is dissolved, the Standing Committee of the Assembly of the Republic functions, composed of the president, vice-presidents and deputies appointed by all parties, according to their respective parliamentary representation.
