Dominican Republic: activists meet one month demanding the right to abortion under three causes

First modification:

Dozens of women activists from the Dominican Republic have been camping for a month in front of the government headquarters, to demand the decriminalization of abortion under three extreme circumstances. The protesters ask President Luis Abinader to promote one of his main campaign promises: a new penal code in which he establishes rights in this matter.

They have called it the camp of dignity or resistance. Although the Dominican Government has not yet defined its position on the decriminalization of abortion for some cases, during this month of activism the movement has achieved fundamental support: “the cohesion that has been taking place in the social movement around this problem” and “the persistent support of the people for this camp”, with endless expressions of solidarity, assures the coordinator of gender studies at Intec University, Fátima Lorenzo.

This Sunday, hundreds of people arrived at the camp set up by the protesters in front of the Government headquarters to support the decriminalization of the voluntary interruption of pregnancy, at least under three extreme causes: rape, danger to the life of the mother or risk to the mother. life of the fetus.

Various organizations of women, farmers, professionals, politicians and even some members of the Government attended the event, full of cultural activities to raise their voices for this cause.

In this Caribbean country, there is still a Penal Code from more than a century ago, from 1884, which criminalizes abortion under any circumstance.

The inclusion of the 3 causes in the Penal Code implies “recognizing rights, strengthening democracy and saving lives, because many girls, women and adolescents die because they cannot find a health service to help them when they are in one of those situations. three defenses, “says Lorenzo.

They demand that the president fulfill his campaign promise

The Congress of the Dominican Republic began the discussion of a new Penal Code, supposedly more modern, but maintains the criminalization of abortion.

According to the long-standing text, penalties of up to two years in prison are considered for women who have abortions and 20 years for those who practice them.

The activists demand that the president, Luis Abinader, who took office a few months ago as president, to comply with one of his main campaign flags, promote new legislation that allows abortion under all three causes.

Abinader proposed to give the country “a shock of institutionality and modernity ”, so the activists tell him to be“ consistent with what he promised in the campaign ”, since the support he showed for this cause during the campaign that led him to the Presidency last year would have been only“ opportunistic ” August, Lorenzo concluded.
