Africa Assimi Gaita, the leader of the Mali Military Junta, is the new president of the interim administration

Goitan is expected to complete the post-coup transition process.

Malin the head of the country’s military junta has been appointed by the Constitutional Court Assimi Goitan President of the Malian Interim Administration.

According to the court’s decision, Goitan is due to complete the transition process following last year’s coup in Mali.

The Constitutional Court said it had ruled because the presidency had become vacant after the previous interim president Bah Ndaw left his post.

On Monday, soldiers abducted President Ndaw as well as the caretaker prime minister Moctar Ouanen to a military base. They were then told they had resigned. They were released on Thursday.

Maliin appointed interim president and prime minister in September under international pressure. The soldiers had been beaten by the president Ibrahim Boubacar Keitan power in August and handed over power to the interim administration in October. The country was to return to civilian rule within a year and a half.

Although the interim administration was supposed to be a civilian administration, the soldiers held a dominant position in it, which provoked strong criticism. Ex-Defense Minister Ndaw became president and Goita, who led the junta, became his vice president. Ndaw is a retired army officer.

The arrest of Ndaw and Ouan was preceded by a reorganization of the government to respond to criticism of the caretaker government. However, Goita, the leader of the military coup, intervened in the game when the caretaker government tried to drop out members of the military junta in its ministerial round.

UN the security council on Wednesday strongly condemned the ousting and arrest of Mali’s interim leadership.

The Security Council resolution stated, inter alia, that a change of leadership by force, including forced resignations, was not acceptable. However, the resolution did not mention any punitive measures, such as sanctions.

The arrest of Ndaw and Ouan was also condemned by, among others, the West African Economic Organization (ECOWAS), the African Union, the EU and the United States.
