The police of Brazil and Italy, plus the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol), reported that they captured the Italian capomafia Rocco morabito, appointed as head of the Calabrian mafia clan ‘Ndrangheta and that he had fled Uruguay before being extradited to his country.

They captured him this Monday in the city of Joao Pessoa. According to a statement from the Brazilian Federal Police (PF), finding Morabito in the state capital of Paraiba “was the result of a joint operation” following an arrest warrant for extradition purposes issued by the local Supreme Court.

Another Italian citizen who was with Morabito – he was not identified – was also captured in the same operation and, according to the Brazilian Police, it will also be requested that his extradition be authorized by the Brazilian Justice.

According to the information, a team of the Italian Police and Interpol agents in Rome traveled to Brazil on Sunday with the expectation of the capture of the mobster.

“There are records of Rocco Morabito’s actions in drug trafficking between Brazil and Europe since the 1990s, according to the investigation at the time carried out in the area of ​​the ‘King’ operation, and more recent operations indicated the ‘Ndrangheta’s relationship with Brazilian criminal organizations“said the PF.

Morabito, the statement cited, was imprisoned in Uruguay in 2017 after 22 years being wanted by the Italian authorities, but in June 2019 he fled from prison and became, again, a one of Italy’s three most wanted fugitives.

In Uruguay, where he had lived for about 10 years with a false passport, the mobster was convicted of criminal association, drug trafficking and other serious crimes with a sentence of more than thirty years in prison.
