Contrary to what the first version of this article reported, the State of Paraná accounts for 12 deaths from the Delta variant, and not 14. Altogether, the country has 21 deaths from the strain. Corrected version follows.
Brazil has already registered at least 247 cases and 21 deaths from the Delta variant of the new coronavirus. More transmissible, this strain was originally identified in India and has halted plans to reopen economic activities in Europe and the United States. Ten states and the Federal District have already reported infected by the variant, but experts believe that the number may be much higher, given the difficulties of genomic surveillance in the country.
The balance of cases is from the Ministry of Health until Thursday, 29. Rio is the state with the most contaminated by the strain (99), followed by the Federal District (51) and Paraná (29). There are also São Paulo (25), Rio Grande do Sul (14), Maranhão (7), Santa Catarina (7), Goiás (4), Ceará (4), Minas (4) and Pernambuco (3).
The first cases of the mutation were identified in Maranhão, in May, in the crew of a ship coming from abroad. The episode made the federal government send extra doses of the vaccine to the State and reinforce the immunization of air and land transport workers.
Now, the Jair Bolsonaro administration’s strategy has been to send extra batches of vaccine to border states, with the aim of creating a sort of “epidemiological cord” against the virus variants. Of the deaths so far, the majority were in Paraná (12), followed by the Federal District (4), Rio (4) and Maranhão (1). The first death with Delta was a 42-year-old pregnant woman in Apucarana (PR).
The Ministry of Health said, in a note, that the “respective contacts (of those infected) are monitored by the local Epidemiological Surveillance and Health Surveillance and Health Center teams, as directed by the Covid-19 Epidemiological Guide.”
The folder also said that it has “strengthened guidance to states and municipalities, regarding genetic sequencing, immediate notification, tracking and isolation of cases and contacts, in addition to other prevention actions.”
Studies show that Delta is more transmissible than other strains, but not necessarily more aggressive. Scientists point out that the variant has spread in countries where a good part of the population is already vaccinated. This could explain the low number of admissions and deaths. It is also known that just the 1st dose of an immunizing agent may not be enough to stop the infection – two injections are effective against the new strain in the cases of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines, according to studies whose results have already been published.
