A unique gold treasure was discovered during railway work in Lower Austria. It is not the first find that has caused an uproar in the small town of Ebreichsdorf near Vienna.
Ebreichsdorf – Everyday railroad work has unearthed a unique gold treasure in Austria. It was buried around 3,000 years ago and has “European-wide significance,” as the Federal Monuments Office in Austria reports. He was immediately placed under protection.
The archaeological finds were discovered in Ebreichsdorf in the Lower Austrian district of Baden. Work is currently taking place there on the double-track expansion of a railway line between Vienna-Meidling and Wiener Neustadt, as announced by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) on Thursday (September 30).
Austria: Unique gold treasure found during railway work near Vienna
The archaeological finds – a gold bowl, several gold spirals and remnants of a textile interwoven with gold – are dated to around 1000 BC. The found bowl is splendidly decorated and still shimmers impressively even after 3000 years underground.
Christoph Bazil, President of the Federal Monuments Office, described the discovery of the gold treasure as “spectacular”. The archaeological excavation in Ebreichsdorf, which is being carried out for him in the course of the railway works, will “go down in history”. Archaeologists have been digging in Lower Austria for two years. The gold jewelry that has now emerged is perhaps the highlight of the excavations, but by no means the first spectacular find in the municipality with 11,422 inhabitants south of Vienna.
Gold treasure find in Austria – it is not the first sensation in the area
In the course of the railway work, an entire settlement from the late Bronze Age (1,300 to 800 BC) came to light. According to the ÖBB announcement, almost its entire extent was exposed. Around 1000 year old remains of residential, work and storage buildings were found. The archaeologists have already been able to assign 5000 find numbers since 2019.
In total, an area of 70,000 square meters was examined and 5,000 find numbers were assigned. The discoveries – including the remains of residential, work and storage buildings – give insights into the living conditions and the living conditions at that time. After completing the scientific work, some of the finds are to be exhibited in the Natural History Museum in Vienna. And maybe the construction work will reveal even more treasures, because it shouldn’t be finished until the end of 2023.
Meanwhile, another spectacular discovery was made in Germany – but not in the ground, but in the sky.
